Web Systems Engineer

Location:Austin, TX
Employment Type:Full Time
Branch Location:Other
Description:

This position is located in Austin, TX.

We are currently seeking an experienced contract-to-perm Web Systems Engineer to join our growing Web Systems team in our IT Infrastructure division.

Our Web Systems team owns the back end of our company's website- Java app servers, content management, Web services, search, Web security, performance, scripting, Web 2.0-ey community software, and all the other fun things that Web systems people do. We design, implement, and support these and other cool technologies, working interactively with our programmers, designers, marketers, and technology groups to bring products to the world.

We're looking for a smart, motivated person with a good understanding of how the Web works. The position is for a junior to mid-career self-starter who's interested in taking ownership of an area of Web technology and "making it happen" in a consensus-driven environment. You'll need good UNIX skills, be able to program/script in something (shell, Perl, PHP, Python, whatnot) and most importantly, a big picture understanding how systems work together on the Web.

This is a Web systems admin position - not Web design, Web applications programming, help desk, or back room systems admin. Typical activities include configuring a load balancer, figuring out why someone's Java app is crashing the app server, teaching some people how to use a wiki, finding security holes in a Web application, debugging why a new HTML page is really slow, responding to a text from a search crawler that's gotten gummed up, reviewing a new Java application design for scalability issues, conducting a vendor evaluation of content delivery networks, and coding up a great new tool to automate your team's work.

Opportunities this position will provide:
•A chance to excel and room to innovate
•Hands on experience with a wide variety of Web technologies in an enterprise environment
•Provide 24x7 support for the site (there is an oncall rotation)
•Network with a wide variety of other smart and motivated professionals
•Troubleshoot complex technical issues across all levels of the technology stack
•Responsibility to improve things that could be better

Qualifications:
•BBA, MIS or BS in MIS, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, related field, or equivalent experience
•2+ years UNIX systems administration (Red Hat Linux or Solaris preferred)
•1+ year Web server administration (Apache or other), J2EE application server experience strongly preferred (OracleAS, Weblogic, Websphere, or JBoss/Tomcat)
•Intimate knowledge of HTTP/HTTPS protocols, and strong familiarity with other Internet protocols
•Knowledge of other web concepts such as FTP, firewalls, caching, DNS, and proxies
•Scripting ability in Perl, bash, PHP, Python, and/or similar scripting languages

Any or all of the following are a big plus:
•Experience with content management systems (e.g. Vignette v7), search (e.g.FAST ESP, Lucene), or SOA
•Demonstrated passion for the Web, such as active involvement in industry groups
•Understanding of TCP/IP networking, routing, and directory services (LDAP/AD)
•Experience with clustering and load-balancing applications
•Some light experience with database concepts - Oracle, Postgres, mySQL experience
•Java programming
•Web page design (CSS, HTML, JavaScript) - keep in mind this is not a Java programming position or a Web page creation/design position; it is a systems administration position
